The Eye's Mind

Often we hear of "the mind's eye", meaning the way the mind sees, i.e. interprets or imagines the subject of its thoughts.

However, for an artist, the reverse is the case: the eye informs the mind.

Visual perception takes precedence over thought.

The eye finds facts; it finds ambiguity; it finds confusion; it finds contradiction; it finds what can be seen and makes note of that which cannot be seen.

Vision finds truth because it must abandon preconception.

The eye studies the elements within view, their position, behavior, energy, and their relationship to each other.

Making art teaches the artist about reality.

Art springs from the artist’s viewpoint, understanding and interpretation of the reality her eye has discovered through pure observation.
